Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (16-21-1) dropped its contest in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday night to the Ohio State Buckeyes (12-21), 7-6.

Travis Sankovich and Daniel Carinci each drew walks to lead off the ballgame. Luke Edwards stepped to the plate and sent the 0-2 pitch to left center for a single to score Sankovich. The base knock extended the junior’s on-base streak to 47 games and his hit streak to 12.

Jordon Billups then reached on an error which sent Carinci home. Kyle Schaefer followed with a sacrifice fly to put Edwards across the plate and a Drew Steelhammer base hit to left brought home Billups to make it 4-0 Herd after the top of the first.

Marshall starting pitcher Chad Heiner gave up an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning. However, the righty settled in and faced the minimum across the next two frames.

The Buckeyes used a couple of extra-base hits in the bottom of the fourth to cut the MU lead to 4-2, but Heiner threw a 1-2-3 frame the next inning, ending it with a strikeout.

In the top of the sixth, Steelhammer hit his second of the homer of the season to make it 5-2 Herd. Heiner went three up, three down in the bottom half of the frame.

Marshall benefited from a pair of Ohio State errors as Sankovich crossed home on a two-out wild pitch to extend the visitor’s advantage to 6-2 in the top of the seventh.

The Buckeyes added a run on a wild pitch the next half inning. The home side then tallied four runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Herd trailed 7-6.

Daniel Carinci singled in the ninth and Avery Lee came on to pinch run. Lee was caught stealing to end the game.
