Marietta High senior Lucy Scott, third from right, signed Monday to continue her rowing career at Ohio State University. She plans to major in marketing.

About a year ago, Lucy Scott knew very little about the sport of rowing.

Monday, she signed a National Letter of Intent to join the rowing team at Ohio State University.

“Extremely excited,” said Scott, who plans to major in marketing at OSU.

“The opportunity came about in a little different way. I had been talking to a few colleges about recruitment, but then when I applied to Ohio State and got accepted I had some really amazing opportunities there. It just seemed like a really good fit as a school. I was able to coordinate with them and talk about joining their novice program.”

Scott is originally from California, but her family moved to Ohio in the summer of 2020.

She joined the Tiger Navy last spring as a junior and adapted well to the sport. Now, she’s set to compete at the NCAA Division I level.

“Senior year has been really good,” she said. “I’ve been able to take a lot of college classes, AP classes and overall just spending time doing things I love.”

As for joining the Buckeyes, Scott said “I feel like I am pretty new to the program. I didn’t know a lot about Ohio State since I’m not really from Ohio. I never had that excitement for it that most people do, but I definitely feel like I’ve developed that especially in the past few months. I’ve done a lot of talking with teammates and getting to know them.”

Scott credited Marietta crew coaches Joe Tewkesbury, Tanner O’Connor and Annie Devorak for helping her become a successful rower.

“They have helped me immensely,” she said. “I was able to go from knowing nothing about rowing and hardly knowing it was a sport to competing at a D1 level in literally a year. Everything they’ve done for me, mentally and physically, is amazing.”

The Ohio State women’s rowing team is led by head coach Kate Sweeney. The Buckeyes compete in the Big Ten conference.

While Scott is excited for the next chapter of her academic and athletic career, she still has her sights set on this spring. On May 14 and 15, Marietta will compete in the Midwest Championship in Milford, Mich., where Scott will be looking to improve on last season’s performance.

“Last year my novice-4 came in second in Midwest and we didn’t make it to Nationals, so the goal this year is to make it to Nationals,” she said. “That’d be really awesome. In both the 8 and the 4, if we can really work together as a team and resolve any issues, I think we have the power, we have the technique, if we can just keep going, it can only go up from here.”
