Murphy on what to look for in Ohio State’s spring game

On Saturday, Ohio State fans will get a chance to return to Ohio Stadium for the first time since late November for the annual spring game. The event will mark the first look for fans at the 2022 Buckeyes.

It’s been an important spring for the Scarlet and Gray. After failing to win a fifth straight Big Ten title and missing out on the College Football Playoff for the first time in three years, head coach Ryan Day made changes, revamping his coaching staff with Jim Knowles as defensive coordinator, Tim Walton as secondary coach/cornerbacks coach and Perry Eliano as safeties coach. Day also hired Justin Frye as offensive line coach to help improve a run game that wasn’t good enough in 2021. The spring game will mark these coaches’ debut at the Horseshoe.

It will also be an opportunity for a number of young players to showcase what they can do in front of fans for the first time. Ohio State had 11 freshmen enroll early, as well as the transfer additions of safety Tanner McCalister and linebacker Deamonte Trayanum.

As far as spring games go, the 2022 Buckeye event should be an interesting one.

On Wednesday, Bucknuts team writer Patrick Murphy joined Brandon Beam and Bobby Carpenter on The Morning Juice on 97.1 The Fan to help preview Saturday’s spring game.

Topics discussed included:

  • How did Patrick Murphy celebrate the five-year anniversary of his “uncle” Charlie Murphy’s passing?
  • What Patrick is looking for the most the rest of this week and in the spring game for Ohio State
  • Have the Buckeyes discussed the format for the 2022 spring game yet?
  • Who are the freshmen early enrollees fans should watch out for on Saturday in the spring game?
  • Have the Scarlet and Gray’s backup quarterbacks separated from each other and what is the confidence in either if they had to go into a game?
  • Was basketball guard Meechie Johnson‘s decision to enter the transfer portal after what was technically his freshman year a surprise?
