Brian Blum named next Maysville Local Schools superintendent

NEWTON TOWNSHIP — After months of searching and more than a dozen interested candidates, Maysville Local Schools has a new superintendent.

On Monday night, the Maysville Board of Education unanimously voted to hire Brian Blum, who currently serves as a superintendent of Van Buren Schools in Northwest Ohio.

The district started a search for a new superintendent in February after current Superintendent Ruth Zitnik announced her retirement last fall.

Blum will start Aug. 1 ahead of the 2022-23 school year, with a base salary amount of $135,000 a year.

Blum was part of a second round of applicants after the district reopened the job posting. The TR requested the resumes for the second round of applications, but the request was not filled until after Blum’s hiring.

According to his resume, Blum has been superintendent of Van Buren for a little less than two years.

Since 1999, he has served at six different districts in various administrative positions, mostly principals of elementary schools. But he said he plans to be with Maysville for a long time.

“The one common theme I saw (at Maysville) was a passionate community,” he said. “I don’t see any more moves.”

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in special education from Wright State University. He also earned a master’s degree in education from Ashland University, and a superintendent license from Miami University.

As the Van Buren superintendent, he is credited with developing a continuous improvement plan, overseeing the district when it renewed an operating levy, leading community forums and leading district curriculum, finance and faculty committees.
