Lauren Stauffer

BATON ROUGE, La. — Lauren Stauffer of Lisbon was initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines, at Youngstown State University. She is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

University of Mount Union

ALLIANCE — On March 26 University of Mount Union students spent their morning volunteering as part of the Regula Center’s March Saturday of Service. Harley Smith from East Liverpool took part in the event. The students assisted with demolition at a property being remodeled by Alliance Area Habitat for Humanity and moved furniture to the new location of RAM Ministries. Throughout March, students have also participated in take and make projects, supported Easter baskets for Project KARE and held a food drive to support the Alliance Community Pantry. In April, the Regula Center will coordinate another take and make project, a collection of used bikes and two Saturdays of Service. Beta Gamma Sigma

YOUNGSTOWN — The following local students have been inducted into the YSU Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society: Brock Cheurco of East Palestine, a Finance – Financial Management Track major at YSU; Wayne Denny of Alliance, a Business Leadership major at YSU. Beta Gamma Sigma, with nearly 85,000 members in more than 190 countries, is the world’s premier business honorary reserved exclusively for schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Students must be registered in a business administration program and rank in the top 10 percent of the sophomore, junior or senior classes or top 20 percent for master’s programs.

Holden Memorial Scholarship

YOUNGSTOWN — Two local students were among the winners of the WKBN 27 Caring for Our Community campaign’s Tom Holden Memorial Scholarship contest. Sydney Rhodehamel, a senior at South Range High School, earned third place for her entry featured: Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County. Scott Cross, a senior home school student, earned a tie for fifth place for his entry featured: The Brightside Project.

More than 150 students from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Mercer counties wrote commercials for local nonprofit organizations. The winning script will be produced by WKBN, featuring the Help Network of Northeast Ohio. Community members can watch it throughout the year on WKBN 27 and FOX Youngstown. The winner and five runners-up will each be featured in commercials airing on WKBN throughout April and May.
