Mid-Ohio Valley students compete for WVU scholarship | News, Sports, Jobs

MORGANTOWN — Four students from the Mid-Ohio Valley region are competing for the Foundation Scholarship awarded by West Virginia University for the 2022-23 academic year, according to a press release by the university Monday.

They are among 20 students vying for the top scholarship offered by WVU.

Having already become recipients of the Neil S. Bucklew Scholarship, all 20 incoming freshmen became automatically qualified to compete for the Foundation Scholarship, which will provide additional scholarship money in addition to their Bucklew scholarships.

The students from the Mid-Ohio Valley are:

* Emma Fleming, a dual English and Spanish major from Parkersburg High School, enjoys writing poetry and movie reviews. She is looking to become a lawyer and fiction writer fluent in Spanish to help break down cultural barriers and allow others to see the world through a more diverse lens.

* Zachary Taylor, an electrical and computer engineering major from Roane County High School, is looking forward to using 3D modeling design and unorthodox approaches to solve complex problems related to sustainable development “to make the best better.”

* Matthew Olivero, a dual mechanical and aerospace engineering major from Hurricane High School, has always been fascinated with aircraft and looks forward to joining the development and production of more eco-friendly airplanes while working for a large aerospace company.

* Carter Leadmon, from Hurricane High School, will begin his journey at WVU in computer science and computer engineering.

According to Shauna Johnson, News and Information Manager-University Relations for WVU, the Bucklew and Foundation scholarships can be used together. A student who wins both the Foundation and Promise Scholarships will have the Promise Scholarship removed in favor of the Foundation Scholarship.

Johnson also said, “These students represent the best of the Mountain State. We are happy to welcome them to West Virginia University.”
