Astronomer Closes $213M Round for Data Orchestration

SAN FRANCISCO and CINCINNATI — The data orchestration platform Astronomer secured $213 million in additional funding.

Astronomer closed its Series C financing round, according to the company last month.

The round was led by Insight Partners, with participation by Meritech Capital, Salesforce Ventures, J.P. Morgan, K5 Global, Sutter Hill Ventures, Venrock, and Sierra Ventures.

Astronomer will use the funds to grow its engineering and customer success teams, accelerate the growth of its Apache Airflow-powered data orchestration platform, and scale its go-to-market operations.

The funding also positioned Astronomer to acquire Datakin, a data operations tool, to help data teams unlock operational lineage as a native component of the orchestration platform.

To date, Astronomer, founded in 2018, has raised over $282 million in financing, according to CrunchBase.

Astronomer has increased its headcount 10x since 2020 to over 250 global employees.

The company says its clients range from startups to big-box retailers, gaming companies, and banks.

Astronomer’s data orchestration platform was developed for data teams to build faster together, by accelerating the development of data pipelines with tools that allow them to “focus on code that impacts the business.”

“As companies of all sizes struggle to make sense of their data, data orchestration has become a competitive necessity,” said Joe Otto, CEO of Astronomer.

“At the same time, data teams must be able to trust their data to effectively extract its value.”

George Mathew, managing director at Insight Partners, said “as the modern data stack has arrived at scale, we now need an orchestration experience to support today’s sophisticated, high-velocity data pipelines.”
