Wooster has big day against Ohio State-bound pitcher

BASEBALL
Wooster 11, Lexington 3
Wooster’s hitters were disciplined and opportunistic against Ohio State-bound Cole Pauley, rolling to a sweep of Lexington to start the season.
A back and forth first three innings saw Lexington take a 1-0 lead, Wooster rallied to lead 3-1 and the Minutemen evened it at 3-3. The Generals plated a pair in the fourth to take the lead for good and put this game away for good measure with six in the fifth.
Drew Rader was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Blake Bowen followed Rader by drawing a bases-loaded walk to score both Wooster runs in the fourth. In the fifth, Brady Bowen delivered a key two-run single, Karson Coblentz had an RBI single before Blake Bowen closed out this game with a two-run double to make it 10-3. Blake Bowen finished with three RBIs, Zach Harpster knocked in a pair and Brady Bowen added two RBIs.
Ashton Still earned the win for the Generals as he was the fourth reliever on the hill and struck out a pair.
Hiland 11, Tuscarawas Valley 1
Jumping on Tusky Valley with seven runs in the first two innings, Hiland never looked back in notching this season-opening win.
Will Schlabach went the distance in tossing five innings of three-hit ball and finished with six strikeouts. He added two hits and scored three times and Tony Yoder drove in four runs on two hits.
Triway 13, Orrville 3
Kain Weaver tossed five solid innings with seven strikeouts and Triway’s offense did the rest in this season-opening win over Orrville.
Sparking the offense for the Titans was Weaver with three hits and two runs scored and Carter Schmid, who had three hits, five RBIs and two runs scored. Grant Schag and Cooper Barton both knocked in a pair of runs and Schag scored three times for Triway.
Parker Evan led the Red Riders with two hits and an RBI and Titus Kerr suffered the loss giving up eight runs over three innings.
Hillsdale 4, Norwayne 2
Hillsdale evened up its league record at 1-1 by avenging Tuesday’s season-opening loss to Norwayne. Using a three-spot in the top of the seventh, the Falcons rallied from a 2-1 deficit entering that final frame to get the win.
Caden Fickes was superb on the hill, working the distance with eight strikeouts and allowing just two hits for Hillsdale.
Backing Fickes at the plate was Nick Kandel with two hits, including a double and three RBIs. There was Jack Fickes with two hits and two runs scored and Caden finished with two base knocks.
The Bobcats were led by Mike Steingass who erased a 1-0 deficit with two-run bomb in the bottom of the sixth. Jed Hanzie suffered the loss despite working 6.2 solid innings with eight strikeouts.
Waynedale 11, Rittman 1
Jay Mast doubled twice, was 3-for-3, drove in three runs and scored three times and Waynedale opened with a dominating win over Rittman.
Also swinging a hot bat for the Golden Bears was Trey Barkman with a triple and two runs scored and Conner Gatti had a base hit, walked and scored both times. On the hill, Barkman tossed a four shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight and Timmy Short finished up the last frame with three strikeouts.
Pelfrey picked up the Indians lone hit and Aidan Milosevich was tagged with the loss.
Dalton 11, Chippewa 0
Isaac Wengerd was in midseason form on the hill and Dalton rolled to a season-opening win over Chippewa. Wengerd worked four shutout innings, allowing one hit and fanning 10 for the win and Kole Miller closed it out with one perfect frame and one strikeout.
Cade Mullett had two singles and drove in three, Owen Beatty, Grant Johnson and Mason McCune each scored twice and Will Carmichael doubled two times to pace the Bulldogs.
Getting the Chipps only hit was Isaiah Radebaugh and Grant Johnson took the loss as he surrendered seven runs, six of which were unearned.
West Holmes 4, Madison 2
West Holmes moved to 2-0 on the season and in the conference by sweeping Madison to start the year.
Nick Ginsburg earned the win by working six innings and striking out seven before Blake McCombs closed the door by striking out a pair in the seventh.
At the plate, Gino DiNardi with four singles and Brody Allen collected three hits for the Knights.
Northwestern 2, Smithville 0
Single scoring tallies in the fourth and sixth inning proved to be enough as Northwestern knocked off Smithville.
Notching the win was Luke Wright with nine strikeouts as he worked five shutout innings and allowed just two hits. Barnette finished up the last two innings with two strikeouts to earn the save.
Fiala paced the Huskies with two hits while Brandon Barnette, Jacob Ward, Cade St. Clair and Gunnar Mullet each had one hit.
The Smithies were led by Trey Lowe, Andy Navaratil and Jared Reed with base hits and A.J. Tuel took the loss, working four innings and striking out five.
SOFTBALL
Triway 14, Orrville 0
New year, same results for Triway. The Titans jumped all over Orrville with four in the first and 10 in the fourth to earn a season-opening win.
Carter Wachtel led the charge for Triway with four RBIs on two hits and Emily Yacapraro scored three times, drove in a pair and was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day. In the circle, Wachtel was lights out in tossing a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts.
There was Emma Hudson lining two hits while Haylee Pruitt, Madison Fatzinger and Hanna Massaro each ripped a double.
The Red Riders lone hit came from Morgan Ankenman at the top of the order.
Northwestern 13, Smithville 0
Olivia Amstutz homered and doubled, Audrey Franks drove in three and tossed a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead Northwestern past Smithville.
Also collecting two hits was Emma Ewing to join Amstutz and Daylie Rickard tripled for the Huskies.
Hillsdale 13, Norwayne 6
Taylor Morgan doubled twice, drove in a pair and notched the win with nine strikeouts to lead Hillsdale past Norwayne. Inside the circle, Morgan worked five innings before freshman Keira Filius made her varsity debut pitching and struck out three in two innings of work.
Collecting three hits apiece were Kylie Ohl, Belle Dalton and Filius as Dalton and Filius both drove in three runs. Lacey Fickes tripled while Ohl and Dalton both legged out a two base hit.
Julia Larrison led the Bobcats with three hits, Emrie Schmidt added a pair and Alexa Cottrell suffered the loss despite going the distance with six strikeouts.
Loudonville 19, Crestview 3
Payton VanSickle homered, doubled, drove in three runs, had three hits and scored five times to spark Loudonville past Crestview.
Also swinging a hot bat were Karena Burgess and Kenzie Cutlip (double) with three hits apiece while Natalee Buzzard and Maddie Kline both had two hits.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Tuslaw 84.5, Orrville 52.5; Tuslaw 84, Triway 51
Tuslaw’s boys picked up a pair of wins at Orrville High School, dominating Triway and the Red Riders.
Mustangs placed first in 13 of the 17 events against Triway and nine events against Orrville. Jared Wenzel had a big day for Tuslaw, winning the 100 hurldles and 300 hurdles against Triway and the 300 hurdles against Orrville. The Red Riders’ Calvin Speicher bested Wenzel in the 100 hurdles with a 15.0. Speicher also placed first in the high jump against the Mustangs with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.
Cameron Soss was strong in Triway’s losing effort, winning the 100 (10.9) and 200 (23.4) relatively easily.
GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Orrville 68.5, Tuslaw 68.5; Tuslaw 76, Triway 60
Orrville and Tuslaw played to a draw and Tuslaw narrowly edged Triway in girls track action.
Malena Cybak’s times in the 800 (2:30.2), 1,600 (5:10.3), 3,200 (12:48.4) were good enough for first-place finishes against both teams. She also ran for Tuslaw’s first-place 4×400 relay team.
Ainsley Hamsher’s 12-6 jump in the pole vault was a highlight for Orrville. Hamsher also placed first in the 100 hurdles.
Triway’s Maddie Kline dominated the throwing events, with a 94-4 discus and a 32-1 shot put.
BOYS TENNIS
Wooster 3, Hoover 2
One night removed from a narrow loss to North Royalton, Wooster flipped the script and notched this win over Hoover.
Brock Ranney came from behind to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at second singles and both doubles teams notched victories. Garrett Ranney and Ishaan Gireesh bounced back from a tough second set to win 6-0, 4-6, 7-6, and Jared Pennell and John Sibilia won 6-3, 6-1 at second doubles. Mark Wood suffered a tough setback at first singles despite leading early in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 loss.
“It was a great win over a really good team,” said Generals coach Justin Crooks. “We came back from being down in multiple matches. I am really proud of the growth of this team in these early matches.”
BOYS LACROSSE
Hawken 9, Wooster 8
Trailing 6-0 in the first quarter, Wooster put it on overdrive to rally back and outscored Hawken 8-3 the rest of the way. It just wasn’t enough as the Generals fell in this contest.
