OSU kindness campaign 2022

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State University is promoting mental health one plant at a time.

What You Need To Know

  • Ohio State University and Scotts Miracle Grow partnered on a campus-wide kindness campaign
  • The goal was for students to plant a succulent to give away to another person
  • Studies showed the link to plants and kindness and mental health

Ohio State University handed out succulents Thursday to give a boost of serotonin. It was part of an annual kindness campaign. The 2022 theme was “Growing Kindness.”

Director of Student Life Tracy Stuck said the goal wasn’t for students to keep the plants, but to give them away to someone else.

“We know if you take one and give it away to someone else, kindness sets off serotonin in your body, which also helps with mental health,” said Stuck.

The university partnered with Scotts Miracle Grow for the campaign. Stuck said why they chose the plant theme.

“We really got into this, too, because we know plants help with mental health,” said Stuck. “On every college campus right now, students, faculty and staff, we’re all struggling with mental health.”

Bianca Banez is a sophomore health science major at OSU. She said she can understand how plants can support mental health.

“I definitely think having something green, alive and flowery is something that will boost your serotonin,” said Banez.

She also said just being out and about and getting to see her classmates at an event helped her mood.

“You can just see how happy everyone is and just getting to socialize with other people is improving their health,” said Banez.

Ohio State and Scotts gave out 10,000 succulents.
