Baseball Eyes Southern Series at #3 Trevecca Nazarene

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Dominican baseball team continues Great Midwest play with a trip to Nashville to face nationally ranked Trevecca Nazarene this weekend.

SERIES INFO

  • The Panthers and Trojans have revised their four-game series to begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19. The two sides will play another twinbill on Sunday, March 20.
  • Saturday is set for a noon start, while Sunday is a 1 p.m. start, both local time (CT). 
  • Ohio Dominican is 2-6 in its Division II era against Trevecca Nazarene, including seven meetings since the Panthers joined the G-MAC in 2018. 
  • The Panthers have never hosted TNU and lost both halves of a road doubleheader in March 2021, 4-2 and 4-3.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

  • ODU scored a season-high 12 runs in Game Two of its first G-MAC and home series against Tiffin last weekend, but the offense was held to three or fewer runs in the other three contests. 
  • Jake Daniel (Troy, Ohio) has a hit in each of the past six games, all starts, and now leads ODU in season batting average at .385. Daniel hit .429 (6-14) versus Tiffin, including a pair of multi-hit performances. The senior had three RBI and runs scored, running his season total in both categories to five, respectively. 
  • Michael Knapp (Elyria, Ohio) also had at least one hit in every game last weekend and has been one of the Panthers’ most consistant hitters this spring with a .365 average. Knapp and Devan Nail (Elyria, Ohio) pace ODU with 10 RBI each this season.
  • The Panthers lead the G-MAC with 33 stolen bases. Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) has 13 swipes to lead the G-MAC and rank top 25 nationally. David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) stole three bags last week and now has seven this spring, joining Hunt in the top five of the conference. 

PITCHING NOTES

  • Ohio Dominican ranks third in the G-MAC with a 4.70 ERA this spring. 
  • Six different pitchers have recorded a win for ODU this season. 
  • Scott Rouse (Hinckley, Ohio) leads ODU with 25.2 innings pitched, compiling a 1-2 record with 26 strikeouts and a 3.86 ERA. Rouse has went six-plus innings in three-of-four starts this year.
  • Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) headlines the bullpen efforts, allowing four hits and one earned run over 9.1 innings of work. 
  • Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) earn his first win of the season last weekend, going 2.2 innings in relief of the Panthers’ 12-6 victory. Martinez has amassed 8.1 innings of work this spring with eight strikeouts and a 2.16 ERA.

ABOUT TREVECCA

  • Trevecca is riding momentum from its College World Series run in 2021, as the Trojans are 16-3 heading into play this weekend.
  • TNU currently ranks No. 6 and 3 in the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national polls, respectively. 
  • The defending regular season and tournament G-MAC champions, TNU opened conference play last weekend by going 3-1 against Kentucky Wesleyan. 
  • The Trojans are 9-1 at home this spring, including a conference-best eight consecutive wins on home dirt.
