CVS Closing Downtown Columbus Store

On April 1, the Downtown Columbus CVS will be closing its doors for good. The store, located at 109 S. High Street, has served its Downtown customer base as one of the few options near Capitol Square for convenience items and pharmacy needs.

This closure is just one of nearly a thousand across the US, as CVS announced in late 2021 that it would be shuttering 300 stores per year in 2022, 2023 and 2024 to adapt to changing customer needs. The closures are part of a plan to “reduce store density in certain locations”, likely sending existing CVS customers to other nearby locations for their pharmacy services.

“Our retail stores are fundamental to our strategy and who we are as a company,” stated Karen S. Lynch, President and CEO of CVS Health in a release last November. “We remain focused on the competitive advantage provided by our presence in thousands of communities across the country, which complements our rapidly expanding digital presence.”

Following the closure, CVS will have no stores located in Downtown Columbus, with the nearest locations to be found in Victorian Village on Neil Avenue and at the intersection of Parsons and Livingston near Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Customers shopping at the Downtown Columbus CVS in the final few weeks will find many shelves starting to look empty, as employees confirmed today that the store is no longer restocking with new products.

“I’m sorry to hear about the closure of CVS in downtown,” stated Marc Conte, Executive Director of Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District. “I think the market downtown is still strong for a store selling convenience goods along with a pharmacy.”
