Cincinnati Enquirer names high school athletes of week for March 11

In a vote that ended March 11, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through March 6.

Winners through the end of 2021 should have received a certificate through the school’s athletic department. The 2022 certificates are currently being produced and should be mailed after the winter season concludes.

Once they reach the schools, please remember to send a picture of winning athletes with their certificates for the photo gallery to [email protected].

The week’s winners are:

Boys basketball team: Georgetown – Georgetown topped Versailles 58-49 at Fifth Third Arena for the district title, the first for the G-Men since 2007 and first-ever as a Division III team.

Girls basketball team: Cooper – The Lady Jaguars advanced to state and claimed the 9th Region championship after beating Dixie Heights 54-42 and Ryle 53-45.

Boys winter team of the week: Oak Hills bowling – With a 4,167 at the Division I district meet, Oak Hills finished in fifth place and snagged the final qualifying spot for the state tournament.

Girls winter team of the week: Hamilton bowling – A 3,697 team score at the Division I district meet placed Hamilton fifth overall, good enough for a trip to the state meet.

Ohio boys basketball big school player: William Layfield, Lakota West – In his final game, the senior scored 18 second-half points in Lakota West’s season-ending loss to Centerville in the district championship March 6.

Ohio boys basketball small school player: Carson Miles, Georgetown – The junior scored 28 points to steer Georgetown past Versailles, 58-49, on March 5 for the program’s first district championship in 15 years.

Ohio girls basketball big school player: Abby Wolterman, Mount Notre Dame – She had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in MND’s 62-50 regional semifinal win over Princeton March 1.

Ohio girls basketball small school player: Elizabeth Zimmerman, Cincinnati Country Day – The sophomore connected on three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points as CCD secured its first-ever state Final Four berth with a 54-44 win over Tri-Village March 5. She had eight points in the Nighthawks’ regional semifinal victory over Ft. Loramie March 3.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball player: Caleb Mergenthal, East Central – He led the Trojans with 16 points in their season-ending sectional loss to Bloomington South that ended EC’s year with a 16-7 record.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball player: Sereniti Webb, Simon Kenton – The senior scored 27 points with eight rebounds in her final game as SK lost 77-67 to eventual Eighth Region champ Anderson County in the regional tournament.

Boys bowler: Hunter Gallion, Wilmington – The senior advanced to the DI OHSAA state bowling tournament as an individual after bowling a 707 March 4.

Girls bowler: Kylie Fisher, Wilmington – The freshman advanced to the DI OHSAA state bowling tournament as an individual after bowling a 671, good for second place, March 3 at Beaver-Vu Lanes.

Boys big school wrestling: Brentan Simmerman, Little Miami – He won a Division I district championship in the 190-pound weight class March 5 with a 2-1 decision at Kettering Fairmont, advancing to state.

Boys small school wrestling: Matt Ellis, Waynesville – He won a Division II district championship March 5 at Troy’s Hobart Arena after winning 2-0, advancing to state.
