At its annual Presidents Day Tea, the New Connecticut Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) honored area high school seniors who were nominated as their schools’ Good Citizen. The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship -dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

This year’s senior nominees were Morgan Braemer from Fairport, Jane Emily Javorek from West Geauga, Morgan Nicole Fisher from Chardon and Monica Laken Kline from Perry. Three of the students were able to attend and read their essays titled: Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It, “How do the qualities of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership and patriotism) help support our nation?” One of the students will be chosen to receive a $500 scholarship at her senior awards banquet.

The DAR also announced Molly Schneider, of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (NDCL), as its Outstanding Teacher of American History contest winner. The contest recognizes a teacher who shares with her students a spirit of patriotism and support of our country and constitutional government.

Ms. Schneider is the NDCL social studies department chairperson and has been named one of 53 teachers in the entire country and the only one from Ohio to win the prestigious and highly competitive James Madison Foundation Memorial Fellowship.  The Madison Memorial Fellowships recognize promising and distinguished teachers by enhancing their knowledge of the origins and development of American constitutional government so that they can take the lead in educating secondary school students about our nation’s constitutional heritage. The DAR thanks her for all that she does to promote a spirit of patriotism and support of our country and constitutional government, both in her school and in our nation.

Membership in the DAR is open to any female over 18 who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American Independence. For more information, visit www.dar.org.
