Fish fries will begin on Friday at many area churches.

Get your malt vinegar, tartar sauce and lemon slices ready: It’s almost fish fry season.

With Lent beginning Wednesday, area churches, religious organizations and restaurants are primed to start battering up fish and frying them in sizzling hot oil to honor the longstanding tradition.

During Lent — the 40-day Christian season of repentance prior to Easter — observers abstain from meat on Fridays, and fish has long been a popular alternative. That’s why long lines typically accompany these events.

Plus, even non-observers have been known to partake in the deliciousness of a Lenten church fish fry, complete with a menu that generally includes sides of coleslaw, hush puppies and more.
