Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:

  1. 25-year-old mother of two Ashley Darrington was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend at the Hilltop Village Apartments off of Byrne Road. The children were reportedly left in the home after witnessing the violence. A relative of the victim stated police found the body after performing a wellness check. (13abc Action News)
  2. Last Friday, an emergency call was made regarding a care fire in Sylvania at the corner of Erie and Monroe, but a dispatch mix-up sent authorities to Toledo instead. The discrepancy comes after Lucas County moved to a county-wide emergency system which was already drawing criticism. (13abc Action News)
  3. A 15-year-old Rogers High School student is facing assault charges after injuring a campus security officer. The student in question was assaulting another student and then pushed the security officer who attempted to intervene. The officer had to receive treatment at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and the suspect was taken to the Toledo Juvenile Detention Center. (WTOL)
  4. The former home of the Toledo Mud Hens, Ned Skeldon Stadium, is set to be demolished by the end of 2022. The announcement was made on Tuesday after a 3-0 vote by the Lucas County Commissioners. The Mud Hens played at the location from their inception in 1965 until the new stadium was built downtown in 2002. (WTOL)
  5. University of Toledo alumnus Dr. Larry B. Mellick is set to star in a new limited TV series that will debut on TLC February 16. “Stuck” will show audiences real-life emergency medical cases as they unfold and is inspired by Dr. Mellick’s YouTube channel, which boasts half a million subscribers.   • Random Act of Kindness Day is February 17, and students at both the University Of Toledo and Bowling Green State University will participate in spreading the message of positivity.   • Research performed at UToledo has further dispelled a common myth that taking vitamins C, D, and zinc helps prevent death from COVID-19. The study, led by Dr. Azizullah Beran, reviewed several research papers and found no decrease in risk of death due to increased vitamin ingestion. (Press Release Desk)
  • UToledo doctoral candidate Rachel Golonka has received a prestigious fellowship for her work on liver cancer. Golonka received the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Cancer Institute and is one of two students from UToledo to receive such an honor in the last few years. (Press Release Desk)

  • A $90 million construction project is set to begin this spring at the I-475 interchange at U.S. 20A/Maumee Western Road. The plan involves a creating a “diverging diamond” and widening the highway to three lanes. (13abc Action News)
