Update: More Than 13,000 Without Power In Ohio, Marshall Counties | News, Sports, Jobs

The freezing rain that led to significant ice accumulation in the Ohio Valley has more than 13,000 Appalachian Power customers without power Friday morning.

According to Appalachian Power spokewoman Joelle Moray, there are 13,221 customers in the dark in more than 120 outage cases within the company’s coverage area. Chatter on police scanners Thursday night mentioned numerous downed trees due to ice.

Overall in West Virginia, around 17,000 customers are currently without electric service.

Appalachian Power said an additional 40 line crew workers arrived in Wheeling in advance of the storm and are assisting with restoration efforts. More than 175 additional workers are traveling today to the Wheeling area to aid with service restoration.

As heavy ice build-up on our facilities lingers due to freezing temperatures, additional damage may occur due to fallen trees and limbs. Workers are currently assessing damage and clearing safety hazards. Workers are dealing with icy road conditions, which may slow restoration efforts.

Assessors are working to identify damage to facilities, but until the extent of the damage is more fully known in the Wheeling area, restoration estimates cannot be accurately determined.
