Firefighters rescue man from Rhodes Tower elevator after cable snaps
Columbus firefighters rescued an Ohio principal assistant attorney general uninjured Tuesday afternoon after a cable snapped on the elevator he was riding in the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, Downtown.
Fire personnel were called just before 5 p.m. to the 41-story building located at 30 East Broad St., on a report of an unknown number of occupants becoming trapped in the elevator, said Battalion Chief Steve Martin, a spokesman for the city fire division.
Once on scene, it was determined that one man — identified by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost in a tweet as one of his principal assistant attorney generals — was in the elevator. He did not identify the man in the tweet.
Martin said the elevator car’s cable apparently snapped and the elevator droppedd an undetermined distance before the elevator’s emergency braking system automatically engaged and brought the elevator to a stop on the 12th floor.
The man was extricated from the elevator at 5:04 p.m. and indicated he was not injured and did not require medical attention, Martin said.
“Thankfully, he is unhurt, although it appears the elevator car may have fallen several floors,” Yost said in his tweet.
At 629 feet, the Rhodes Tower is the city’s tallest building. The LeVeque Tower has more stories (47), but is just over 555 feet tall.
