Roundup: St. Marys triumphs against USV in boys hoops

ST. MARYS — The host Roughriders knocked Upper Scioto Valley from the unbeaten ranks with a 53-35 boys high school basketball victory Saturday night.

Jace Turner had 12 points and Evan Angstmann and Austin Parks each scored 11 for St. Marys. Maddox Underwood had 14 points for USV.

David Etzkorn had 13 points and Jackson Covault scored eight for Elida.

WAUSEON — St. Marys fell 45-27 to Wauseon in the semifinals and then defeated Bellevue 60-15 in the consolation match.

Against Wauseon, Tate Hisey (106), Tyler Hisey (120) and Carter Sharpe (215) recorded pins and Trevor Hisey (126) won a decision.

Against Bellevue, Tyler Hisey (120), Trevor Hisey (126), Bronson Hertenstein (132), Quincy Tracy (138), Keegan Sharpe (150), Garret Donovan (165) and Stashu Patterson (175) earned pins.

Aurora defeated Wauseon 47-19 to advance to state.

Dale Carroll Invitational

CLYDE — Conner Douglass (150 pounds) was first, Skyler Kirk (113) finished second and Dylan Maus (126) finished fourth for Elida, which ended up in ninth place with 89.5 points behind team champ Norwalk (191). Mason Vonderwell from Delphos St. John’s won the 175-pound division. DSJ was 13th (33) in the team standings.

BLUFFTON — Morgan Smith had 24 points and 12 rebounds, Brianna Gillig had 18 points and nine rebounds and Kayla Prigge scored 15 and finished with five assists and four blocked shots for the host Beavers (11-5, 6-3 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference).

Ohio Northern 58,

Marietta 54

ADA — ONU defeated No. 16 Marietta at the ONU Sports Center.

The win improved the Polar Bears to 11-4 overall and 5-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Pioneers to 15-2 (8-2 OAC).

“This was a good conference win for us,” ONU head coach Mark Huelsman said. “We played well defensively and got offensive contributions from lots of different players, and our seniors stepped up and made big plays at key times.”

Brynn Serbin led the way for Northern with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Ottoville graduate Kasey Knippen added 11 points off the bench, and Shawnee grad Alissa Stahler and Bath grad Jaidyn Hale chipped in eight points apiece. Fort Jennings grad Kristen Luersman and Wapakoneta grad Lexi Jacobs matched Serbin’s team-high five rebounds.

Bluffton 57

BLUFFTON — The host Beavers battled back from an early deficit, but Hanover College was too much down the stretch. Hanover improved to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in the HCAC while Bluffton fell to 5-9 (1-6 HCAC).

Jameel Cosby led the Beavers with 18 points on the day he eclipsed 1,000 career points as a Beaver. Kegan Owen put up a career-best 14 points. Michael Stammen also netted double digits with 11 and led the Beavers with five rebounds.

Marietta 80,

ADA — ONU fell to No. 6 Marietta at the ONU Sports Center.

The loss drops the Polar Bears to 7-8 overall and 1-7 in the OAC, while the Pioneers improve to 14-2 (9-0 OAC).

Wapakoneta graduate Adam Scott had a career-high 23 points and added eight rebounds for ONU.

C.J. Napier added 13 points and three rebounds and Brandon Waugh also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Lima Central Catholic graduate Biggz Johnson had 17 points and Ottawa-Glandorf graduate Ben Westrick scored nine for the University of Northwestern Ohio (8-12, 5-6 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference).

ONU goes 1-2

MUSKINGUM — No. 22-ranked Ohio Northern posted a 1-2 record at the OAC Quad Duals at Muskingum.

The Polar Bears (12-5 overall, 3-2 OAC) began the day with a 53-0 victory against Muskingum, then fell to No. 24 John Carroll 21-18 and No. 7 Baldwin Wallace 22-9.

Jacob Reed, who is ranked No. 12 nationally at 141 pounds, led ONU with a 3-0 record on the day. He won twice by major decision and once by decision to improve to a team-best 31-2 on the season.

ONU falls twice

GAMBIER — Ohio Northern fell in a tri-meet against host No. 4 Kenyon and No. 17 Case Western Reserve at the Steen Aquatic Center.

The Polar Bears (4-3 overall) lost to Kenyon (4-0) 239-51 and to Case (3-3) 220-75. Kenyon topped CWRU 226-73 to complete the tri-meet.

Brady Horgan led Ohio Northern with a second place finish in the 50 free in 21.83 seconds.

Women’s swimming

Polar Bears drop 2

GAMBIER — Ohio Northern fell twice in a tri-meet against host No. 1-ranked Kenyon and No. 20 Case Western Reserve on Saturday afternoon at the Steen Aquatic Center.

The Polar Bears (5-4 overall) fell to Kenyon 248-48 and to Case 238-58. Kenyon also beat CWRU 216-84.

Megan Lubinski led ONU with a third place finish in the 50 free in 25.09 seconds.
