Schill Grounds Management acquires fellow Northeast Ohio landscaper Enviroscapes

Schill Grounds Management, a private equity-backed commercial landscaper based in North Ridgeville, has announced the acquisition of Enviroscapes of Louisville, Ohio in a deal that expands Schill’s service offerings in the Buckeye State as well as portions of western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Financial terms of the deal, the largest in Schill’s nearly 30-year history, were not disclosed.

Enviroscapes’ offerings include landscaping design and maintenance, a service vertical focused specifically on oil/gas and public utilities, and commercial snow and ice removal.

Enviroscapes has 200 employees that will be joining Schill’s workforce of 400. That size creates one of the largest landscaping businesses in the Midwest, according to the company.

Enviroscapes operates out of six locations, including five in Northeast Ohio and one in Columbus.

For Schill, which was founded in 1993, this expansion branches its footprint into the Akron/Canton area in particular, a region Enviroscapes founder and CEO Todd Pugh will oversee as market president.

“I have enormous respect for what Todd and the Enviroscapes team have built and the reputation they have earned in the industry,” said Schill founder and CEO Jerry Schill in a statement. “I’m excited that, after many years of professional collaboration, we can finally come together as partners in building a best-in-class company serving customers well beyond our Ohio roots.”

“The team and I are excited to formalize the partnership with Schill that has existed for many years,” said Pugh in a statement. “I look forward to working alongside Jerry to create new opportunities across the region. Jerry’s energy and passion for the industry are contagious, and I’m confident our combined platform will have incredible opportunities for growth.”

The Enviroscapes deal is Schill’s fifth in the past 18 months. Its other deals include those with Ward + Thornton Landscapes in Cincinnati, Fredericks Landscaping in Cincinnati and northern Kentucky, the Ohio Valley Group in Cleveland and McCoy Landscape Services in Marion, Ohio.

Supporting Schill’s acquisition strategy is Georgia private equity firm Argonne Capital Group, which acquired Schill in September 2020.

The company said it continues to be in the market for additional strategic add-ons for Schill in the Midwest and beyond.
