Ohio youth coach dies in shooting during argument

CINCINNATI, Ohio — A man known for his work in coaching youths died Wednesday when he was shot during an argument with another man at a gas station, police say.

Jearid Irvin, 48, was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center after he was shot at a Shell gas station just after 1 p.m., but he died of his wounds, according to police. A 31-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Police tell Fox 19 that officers saw the two men arguing near an intersection. The argument carried over to the Shell station, where the suspect reportedly pulled out a handgun and shot Irvin. The suspect was quickly arrested, police say.

WCPO Channel 9 reports that Irvin was known as “Coach Sticky” and that he coached youth football and basketball.

“He was my first coach,” Trenell Armstrong tells WCPO. “I wouldn’t be helping out, trying to coach now, if it wasn’t for him. … He was for the kids.”

Police have not said what caused the argument between Irvin and the suspect.
