Mikey’s heads to Olde Towne East; Winter Beerfest postponed

Hometown pizza chain Mikey’s Late Night Slice is set to land at 892 Oak St., the space previously occupied by Yellow Brick Pizza in Olde Towne East, according to Columbus Business First. Last summer, Yellow Brick closed its OTE location in anticipation of a move to the East Market development in Franklin Park. Mikey’s appears to have weathered the pandemic well. Over the past two years, Mikey’s has launched a second brand, High Horse Vegan Pizza Co., and entered into a licensing agreement with Hollywood Casino.

Columbus Winter Beerfest, originally scheduled for Jan. 21-22, has been postponed until April 15-16 as COVID-19 cases surge in Ohio and around the country. Scheduled to take place indoors at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, the event features 350 local, regional and hard-to-find craft beers from more than 130 breweries.

LaSalle’s Southern Kitchen and Bar (30 S. Young St.) is throwing a three-day grand opening Friday-Sunday, Jan. 14-16, featuring soul food, live music, raffles, gifts and a Sunday brunch. Call 614-826-2003 for group reservations.

Granville’s new cocktail bar and music venue Hashi Up (128 E. Broadway, upstairs) has reopened after a hiatus, and now offers a small-bites food menu. Plans are in the works to reopen Hashi, the bar’s sister restaurant located downstairs, after it also closed temporarily.

Temporary Closings

Columbus institution Schmidt’s Sausage House (240 E. Kossuth St.) has shut down for the week because of a COVID-19 outbreak among staff members. The German restaurant tentatively plans to reopen Friday, Jan. 14. The Schmidt’s Sausage Trucks remain in operation this week.

Closings

The owners of Pub Mahone (31 E. Gay St.) will not renew their lease at the end of March, according to a letter posted on the pub’s window. The letter cited rising operating costs as the reason behind the decision and hinted that the pub may relocate elsewhere. The Irish pub’s owners pledge to remain open through St. Patrick’s Day, making it “one to remember.” The pandemic era has been rough on the Downtown entertainment district. Other Downtown establishments that have shuttered over the past two years include Plantain Café, Phenix Bistro, Belly Burger, Uptown 51 Kitchen + Bar, Jack & Benny’s Downtown Diner (the Old North location remains open) and Sí Señor (a Grandview location is open).
