Statewide population of blue jays to be about 520,000 birds


Wednesday is National Bird Day in the United States and Ohio wildlife officials are using the day to analyze the state’s blue jay population.According to the Ohio Division of Wildlife, breeding bird surveys reveal there are around 520,000 blue jays statewide. Wildlife officials said this number represents 2.2% of the global population.The blue jay is part of the crow family. Their bills are large and stout. They also have heavy feet and legs that allow them to spend a lot of time on the ground.Blue jays are omnivorous, meaning they eat both plant and animal material, wildlife officials said.The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is encouraging Ohioans to be on the lookout for blue jays this time a year as they are a common winter resident.Wildlife officials said blue jay’s habitat was primarily oak woods at one point but now blue jays can be seen in city parks and wooded suburban areas.To learn more about the blue jay, click here.
