Central Ohio high school girls basketball: Coffman 64, Gahanna 40
Playing without its leading scorer for the second consecutive game, the host Dublin Coffman girls basketball team got out to a quick start against Gahanna Lincoln on Jan. 4 in a matchup of two of the area’s top teams.
It didn’t help the Lions that less than three minutes into the game, their top player, senior forward and Xavier commit Bella Ward, went down with an ankle injury that sidelined her for the remainder of the contest.
The Shamrocks, who hope to see junior wing player Jenna Kopyar return later this month after she averaged 19 points over the first eight games, got 19 points and seven rebounds from senior forward Cassidy Lafler and won 64-40.
Coffman improved to 9-1 while Gahanna dropped to 8-3.

“We knew this was going to be a really tough game and we did a really good job moving in transition especially,” Lafler said. “We have one of our best players out so we just have to step up and be leaders.”
Lafler and senior wing player Ellie Vaccari both scored eight points in the first quarter as Coffman built an 18-8 lead.
Gahanna was within 22-13 midway through the second quarter, but the Shamrocks got one 3-pointer apiece from Lafler and junior wing player Tessa Grady and led 28-14 by halftime.
In the third quarter, Grady had eight points, including a three-point play, and senior guard Taylor Covington had a pair of three-point plays.
“In the third quarter, we just started to really grind and focus and get down to it,” Shamrocks coach Adam Banks said.

Ward missed five of the Lions’ first 10 games with shin splints but was playing in her second consecutive game when her injury occurred.
Junior guard Laila Marshall had 23 points to lead Gahanna.
“We’re hoping it’s just a twisted ankle and that (Ward) bounces back,” Lions coach Ron Bailey said. “I like the way we kept battling. Dublin Coffman is a tough team and they’re long.”
