Claymont is looking forward to 2022

With the new year quickly approaching we all tend to reflect back on the previous year. We generally ask “Where did this past year go?”. Many of us would be so glad to see 2021 in the rearview mirror and look towards what 2022 has to offer.

Reflecting back on the year of 2021, the Claymont City School District has a reason to be excited for the New Year. During 2021 the district kept taking the needed steps to move forward. Several goals were set for 2021 in the area academics, social/emotional well-being and athletics.

The District Leadership Team (DLT) continued to immerse themselves in collaborative conversations as the District applies the Ohio Improvement Process. Staff members from the Middle School presented at a DLT meeting during 2021 on how they were selecting and implementing effective research-based teaching strategies to have a greater impact on student learning.

Those staff members included: Brian Watkins, Principal, Michele Henry, Assistant Principal, teachers Nathan Cozart, Alisha Mahaffey, and Lindsay Pellegrino. They also presented to several other buildings throughout the district. Imbedding the Ohio Improvement Process throughout the district is a focus and keeping that laser focus on improving student learning will continue into 2022.

Another reason that 2022 brings excitement each building continued the development of their successful Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. Each building throughout the district has set PBIS in conjunction with Leader in Me criteria. Each building has their own respective reward system. Students reach goals in behaviors and if they meet those goals receive positive rewards to reinforce the student’s positive behavior. A recent survey conducted by the State Support Team Region 12 for one of the district buildings showed that building met 28 of 30 criteria points. By meeting 28 points, that building won a bronze award for PBIS.

2021 saw the planning, renovation and construction at Claymont Stadium. During 2021 our athletes and coaches were displaced and inconvenienced during construction. In order to get a workout in, athletes walked through muddy construction planks to reach the old weight room. Wrestlers nightly would roll out and up their mats at the Intermediate School in order to practice. Football players traveled to various fields in the district to have camp and practices. Now that the fieldhouse is complete our athletes have a larger facility to train and practice. The stadium is definitely something to be proud of as it now houses our current and future Mustangs.
