Letter: Leo Academy speaks volumes about charter schools

Leo Academy, formerly Golden Bridge, closed with little notice. This is a privately owned charter school which closed giving employees one week notice and parents two days notice.

Who owns this K-8 school? Who audits their books? Has the owner filled his pockets with taxpayer money? Has he or she put students and employees first?

Public schools get tax money also but they are held accountable. They report a projected budget for three years and are audited on a regular schedule. Students are required to take state test yearly and schools are punished if their public school fails to improve. The public school’s financial records are open to the public. Who saw Leo’s books?

Charter schools do not have to take tests or have to be audited, or have to send in financial projections. Why is Matt Huffman playing with our children’s lives. Matt, level the playing field.

EdChoice Scholarships (vouchers) are paid for with taxpayer money. Did Leo’s owner walk away with a very thick wallet?

Who cares? I do but, Matt Huffman doesn’t. He wants to destroy public schools and give all money to charter schools.

The parents of Leo Academy are asked to deposit their last two EdChoice payments or private tuition payments. Will this be used to pay teachers and bills or will the Leo’s owner get fatter?

By the way, what is the definition of scholarship? Any student can get and EdChoice scholarship whether they have straight A’s or F’s.
