Nutrition on the menu at Medina school board meeting

MEDINA, Ohio — The Medina Board of Education was served a helping of nutrition and cafeteria information at Monday’s school board meeting (Dec. 13).

“We have on our website a program called the Meal Viewer. The Meal Viewer gives you the detail, the menu and the nutritional content for your meals,” said Robert Whitaker, interim director of business affairs.

“This is actually another safety piece for our students, because students with food-related allergies or other issues, they can keep track of carbohydrates and things of the meals that they are going to be buying at all the schools.”

Additionally, free meals (breakfast and lunch) have been provided to all students throughout the pandemic. The lunches are packed and prepared by staff, and the free meals eliminate the need to use — and sanitize — cafeteria pin-number pads at most of the schools.

Claggett Middle School and the high school have opened additional serving lanes and created new areas to eat so that students can spread out. Also, at the elementary schools, some students eat in the cafeteria and some eat in their classrooms to encourage social distancing.

These procedures help create efficient lines, promote social distancing and help keep kids healthy and fed, school board members were told.

In other news, Superintendent Aaron Sable thanked outgoing board members Robert Skidmore, Valerie Pavlik and Aaron Harrison for their hard work, dedication and service.

He wished them well as their terms come to an end and new members Joe Nichols and Jeanne Pritchard prepare to step up. Rebecca Parkhurst and Ron Ross round out the 2022 school board.
