Lake County officials attend unveiling of Ohio Counties interactive display at statehouse
The County Commissioners Association of Ohio recently unveiled a new, interactive display in the Map Room of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
Twenty-five years ago, Ohio’s 88 counties raised $40,000 to help provide the county floor map located in an area of the Statehouse that serves as a central location for guests and school groups to organize and visit.
This year, CCAO and Ohio’s counties have gifted an interactive display allowing visitors to learn more about each county and the state-county partnership.
According to state and local officials, counties are “true partners” to the state by delivering critical services such as the justice system and law enforcement, infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, social services, child and senior protective services, and much more.
Guest speakers present for the unveiling included CCAO President Tim Bubb, Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, Senate President Pro Tempore Jay Hottinger and House Speaker Robert R. Cupp.
The dedication was attended by Lake County Commissioners John Hamercheck and John Plecnik, who were in Columbus for the CCAO/CCEO Winter Conference.
Lake County Administrator Jason Boyd also participated in the annual conference.
The 2021 theme, dubbed “Building a Bridge to Ohio’s Future,” included sessions such as “Where are the Workers? Addressing Workforce Challenges in an Evolving Climate” and “By the Numbers: A Review of County Revenue Trends and Census Data.”
Plecnik said he was pleased to witness the unveiling.
“We are so proud of our county, and it was a real treat to see it featured in such a memorable way,” he added.
In the “Notable Residents” portion, Lake County was recognized for individuals such as President James A. Garfield, NFL Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, NASA astronaut Gregory J. Harbaugh and UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic.
Garfield, who was elected the 20th president of the United States in 1881, was shot in Washington, D.C., on July 2, 1881 (dying 79 days later), serving just under 200 days.
Harbaugh, a veteran of four space flights, logged a total of 818 hours in space after becoming an astronaut in 1988.
Shula still holds records as the NFL’s winningest head coach, compiling 347 career victories and 328 regular-season victories.
As a two-time UFC Heavyweight champion, Miocic is regarded by some commentators as “arguably the greatest UFC heavyweight fighter of all time.”
“Our county has had a genuine impact on the state of Ohio and it was wonderful to see us recognized in Columbus,” Hamercheck said.
The Ohio Statehouse has housed state government since 1857. The Greek Revival structure was started in 1839 and completed in 1861.
