What Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch’s magic-trick selection of Trey Lance tells us

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch saw that everybody across the line was jumpy and overstimulated, so they faked one way, bootlegged the other, watched the opponent flow the wrong direction and my oh my, did most of us end up grasping at thin air while the 49ers’ leaders boogied down the sideline.

After covering them for four years, I learned something the hard way about Shanahan and Lynch this week. I will absolutely admit that their selection of dynamic quarterback Trey Lance — and not pure pocket passer Mac Jones — with the third pick in Thursday’s NFL Draft was a lesson for me. I learned that Shanahan is more flexible philosophically than many of us had thought. I learned that he’s a strategic killer, even in draft prep. I learned that he and Lynch can act.
