Baseball Travels to Mountain State for Weekend Series at Ohio Valley


COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican baseball team is set to close out the road portion of its 2021 regular season with a four-game series at Ohio Valley.

THE BASICS

  • Ohio Dominican and Ohio Valley are set for a four-game conference series on Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17.
  • The series will be played in Parkersburg, W.V. at City Park.
  • The game format will follow the G-MAC series of 9- and 7-inning games on Friday, and 7- and 9-inning games on Saturday.
  • First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. both days.
  • The Panthers enter the weekend with a 15-7 overall and record and 7-7 mark in the G-MAC.
  • Ohio Valley is 4-23 this spring, including a 2-18 conference record.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Ohio Dominican split a four-game series at Canal Park against Malone last weekend, winning the second game each day.
  • Graduate seniors Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio) and Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) led the offense, combining to go 13-of-29 (.448) with four extra-base hits, four RBI and four runs scored.
  • Sophomore Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) collected five hits over four games, and led ODU with four RBI and four runs in the series.
  • Pitching twice in relief was redshirt freshman Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio), who earned one of ODU’s two wins, tossing four total innings. Martinez conceded just two hits and no runs against the Pioneers.

PANTHERS AT THE PLATE

  • Ohio Dominican is hitting .292 as a team entering Friday’s action.
  • The Panthers average 7.1 runs per game, and scored 10-plus runs eight times this spring.
  • On the bases, ODU is third in the country in steals (69) and stolen bases per game (3.1). Both marks also lead the G-MAC.
  • Jace Komminsk leads ODU with a .379 average this spring. Komminsk has 12 extra-base hits, including four home runs, to go with a team-high 25 RBI and 19 runs scored.
  • Sophomore David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) has a team-best 28 hits, hoisting a .364 average entering the OVU series.
  • Silva joins Komminsk and Roger Danison as Panthers hitting over .300 with 20-plus RBI.
  • Brennen Hunt and junior Thomas Staab (Belleville, Ohio) are batting .312 and .307 respectively.
  • Staab is 24-for-27 in stolen base attempts, as his swipe total leads the conference and ranks second nationally.

BLACK & GOLD ON THE BUMP

  • Freshman Scott Rouse (Hinckley, Ohio) continues to have a strong season, despite taking a loss against the Pioneers last weekend.
  • Last time out, Rouse tossed 6.1 innings, allowing three runs, while tying a career high with eight strikeouts.
  • The freshman was named NCBWA Regional and G-MAC Pitcher of the Week after a one-hit shutout against Cedarville back on April 2.
  • For the season, Rouse is 3-2 with a 2.95 ERA.
  • Myles Martinez has pitched 9.0 innings, all in relief, and has yet to conceded a run. The redshirt freshman has eight strikeouts over four appearances.
  • Freshman Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) returned to the field against Malone, earning his fifth save of the season. Bolander, over six appearances, has thrown 11.1 innings with a 1.59 ERA.

ABOUT OHIO VALLEY

  • The Fighting Scots have dropped five straight games, but gave Trevecca Nazarene its only conference loss prior to the losing streak.
  • Ohio Valley is just 2-7 at home this spring, including a 5-1 loss to Salem (WV) last time out on Tuesday, April 13.
  • Ohio Dominican and OVU have met three times since 2016, with the Panthers taking all three contests.
  • This weekend will mark the first trip to West Virginia for the Panthers against the Scots.
  • The last time ODU and OVU met was a doubleheader in Columbus during the 2018 season. The Panthers won 7-4 and 19-1.
