Mattin, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records, was in a group of people who were protesting outside police headquarters on Marconi Boulevard around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday.
The protest, in response to the shooting death of 27-year-old Miles Jackson during what police said was an exchange of gunfire with police inside the Mount Carmel St. Ann’s hospital emergency room Monday afternoon, was largely peaceful until around 9:15 p.m.

According to court records, a set of bolt cutters were used to break handcuffs being used to keep the doors of police headquarters closed, and protesters made their way into the building.
Mattin was one of the people inside the building, according to court records, and was being escorted out by several officers. While those officers were escorting Mattin out, he used what police said was a wooden club to hit one of the officers, a Black sergeant, in the chest and face. The sergeant had a cut lip and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Records show Mattin is a student at Ohio State University. He is scheduled for an initial court appearance on Thursday.
