Ohio Soccer Edged by Akron in Final Regular Season Road Match

AKRON, Ohio –  The Ohio soccer team (2-6-0, 2-6-0 MAC) returned to action on Sunday (April 4), falling to Mid-American Conference foe Akron (2-4-1, 2-4-1 MAC), at Cub Cadet Field in Akron, Ohio. 

The Bobcats out-shot Akron, 12-11, over 90 minutes, while putting eight shots on goal, compared to Akron’s five. Akon had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-4. 

Individually, freshman midfielder Izzi Boyd (Gibsonia, Pa.) generated four shots off the bench, while putting two on goal. Meanwhile, junior defender Taylor Dickerson (Cincinnati, Ohio), recorded two shots with one on goal. Junior defender Olivia Sensky (Powell, Ohio), senior midfielder Jenni Santacaterina (Geneva, Ohio), sophomore defender Heather McGuire (Hamilton, Ohio) and senior forward Sarina Dirrig (Powell, Ohio) all recorded a shot and a shot on goal for the Bobcats. 

Akron got on the board early in the first half on a header goal by sophomore forward Lucia Lobato, giving the Zips a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Akron took that lead into the second half, where the Bobcats generated a number of chances early on. However, Akron sealed the game in the 84th minute on a goal from junior midfielder Carly Pcholinsky, helping lead the Zips to a 2-0 win. 

In net, junior Sam Wexell (Irwin, Pa.) got the start in goal, allowing two goals and made three saves on 11 shots faced. Akron keeper, sophomore Vanessa Berlin, pitched a shutout, making eight saves on 12 shots faced. 

Up next, the Bobcats return to Athens on Thursday, April 8 when they host Kent State. First touch is set for 4 p.m. at Chessa Field.
