Brill Belts Two Bombs as Panthers Sweep Yellow Jackets


COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican baseball team powered its way to a doubleheader sweep over Cedarville Saturday afternoon at Panther Valley, winning 1-0 and 17-14.

The Panthers did it both ways, winning a pitching duel and a high-scoring affair to improve to 13-5 overall. ODU has also climbed back to .500 in Great Midwest play with a 5-5 record. Cedarville drops to 9-11 overall and 6-6 in the G-MAC after play on Saturday.

A trio of Panthers registered four hits in the doubleheader, including sophomore Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio), who had a double and two home runs. Classmates Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) and David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) added four hits over the twin bill as well. The trio combined for eight RBI and eight runs scored.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Sophomore Grayson Hamilton (Lebanon, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) combined to throw a shutout in Game One, as ODU blanked the Yellow Jackets twice during the four-game set.
  • Hamilton drew the start, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits. The sophomore struck out four batters as he improved to 3-1 on the season.
  • Martinez entered in relief to throw the sixth and seventh innings, conceding one hit. The freshman picked up his first collegiate save after striking out three batters, including the final out of the game.
  • Ohio Dominican left nine runners stranded, including three left on base in the third and sixth innings.
  • The Panthers though, scored the game’s only run in the bottom half of the third inning.
  • Freshman Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) led off with a single and later scored on a ground out from graduate senior Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio).
  • ODU outhit Cedarville 6-3 in the game, led by two hits from Silva and junior Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio).

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • The Panthers outlasted the Yellow Jackets in a 3:56 game, which saw the teams combine for 31 runs and 32 hits over nine innings of action.
  • ODU and CU combined for 21 runs over the first three frames, including the Panthers outscoring Cedarville 7-6 in the second inning alone.
  • The Black & Gold batted around in the second and fourth innings to take a 16-9 advantage through four-complete.
  • Seven batters posted a hit in the seven-run second inning for ODU. Silva and junior Zac Wilson (Hamilton, Ohio) each drove in two runs to headline the rally.
  • The first four batters reached safely in a four-run fourth inning for ODU. Wilson drove in another pair of Panthers, while also being one of two players to cross home plate on bases loaded walks.
  • ODU hit three long balls in the game, two from Brill in the first and seventh innings. Graduate senior Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) also went deep in the third frame
  • Cedarville rallied late with one run in the sixth and seventh innings before tacking on three scores in the top of the ninth to make the score 17-14.
  • Graduate senior Danny Matic (Highland Heights, Ohio) left the bases loaded though, striking out the final batter of the game.
  • Picking up his first win of the season was graduate senior Clay Davies (Massillon, Ohio). Davies was the first reliever out of the bullpen for ODU, going 4.2 innings, allowing only two runs.
  • Freshman Andrew Deyhle (Cincinnati, Ohio) tossed two innings, conceding one run in his second collegiate pitching performance.

UP NEXT

  • ODU will travel north next weekend for a four-game conference series against Malone.
  • The Panthers and Pioneers will play two on Friday, April 9, with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
