Prakhar Singh, known for his versatile acting skills, gained recognition for his role as a cab driver in the unconventional love story Family Aaj Kal which is currently streaming on Sony LIV. With experience across various mediums including theatre, television, and now OTT, Prakhar exemplifies the modern actor embracing diverse storytelling platforms. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, he shares insights into his journey, motivations, and aspirations.

1. You played the role of a cab driver. How was the experience?

It was indeed a great experience. As an actor, it’s the most exciting thing that you get to live various lives with every character that you play, and playing a cab driver was particularly interesting. I have always been intrigued by their lives. I have myself met so many cab drivers who have the most interesting stories, and a lot of them drive cabs because of the lack of opportunities, but their aspirations are supremely inspiring. It was a pleasure playing Gaurav and compelling the audience to see beyond his profession.

2. This is a very unconventional love story. What did you love the most about it, and how does it feel to be a part of it?

It is a very unique love story! I am a die-hard romantic and a sucker for romantic stories, and what interests me the most about them is how the love transcends all societal norms and prejudices. We have seen such love stories in the past, like Raja Hindustani, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, etc., but Family Aaj Kal has a different take on it, depicting the grave issue of unemployment, and this makes it very refreshing and relevant. It was a very satisfying experience. You get to talk about the important issues of society while also making the audience fall in love with the characters. What else does an actor need?

3. Any funny incidents during the shoot do you recall?

Every day on set was fun, ya. We were all trying to create something so special together that every single day was full of beautiful experiences. I am sure that while watching, audiences will have a lot of fun!

4. How would you describe your chemistry with Apoorva, both on screen and off screen?

Apoorva is a brilliant actor; she gives a lot to the scene and to her co-actors. She is a thorough professional and a very nice human being. Very easy to work with, hence the chemistry was organic, and that’s all that has been translated onscreen.

5. From TV to OTT, how do you see the transition?

I won’t really call it a transition. Today is the best time to be an actor because you are not limited to one medium. There’s so much out there for everyone. I have dabbled in every possible medium where acting can be practiced, starting from theatre, TV, digital, voice acting, and now the OTT. But the core of it all remains the same, which is acting. I have to say, though, that the character arcs can be explored beautifully in OTT given the longer duration of the stories, which gives an actor a chance to delve deeper. The writing is quite elaborate, and audiences get a lot of time to build a relationship with the characters. So that’s a win for an actor.

6. It’s not an easy job when you aspire to be an actor, start the journey with theatre, and then work in TV and now OTT. There were lots of hardships for you. How did you overcome those and motivate yourself?

It all comes down to passion and an understanding of how the industry and business work. If you change your perspective and focus on improving your craft, learning, and growing with each project, you will be able to overcome the challenges. Obviously, there are low phases, but that is when most of your growth also happens. I don’t look at it as a hardship because I chose it for myself, because I love it so deeply, and I was prepared for what’s about to come.

There are a couple of things I’ve shot for in the last two years, and I am waiting for those projects to get announced so that I can talk about them too.

8. Any dream role you want to play?

My dream is to play the roles that surprise me! That put me in challenging situations where I have to figure out how to bring that part to life. Oh, the joy in such parts! Also, one must understand that it’s not an actor’s medium. You are only as good as the part written and the director who brings that to life. I hope I get to play brilliantly written parts, directed by some amazing directors.

9. If you get the opportunity to go on a date with an actress from Bollywood, who would it be?

I don’t want to go on a date, but I definitely want to work with brilliant actresses like Shefali Shah, Tabu, and Tillotama Shome, to name a few.
