Ranking Ohio’s top 100 companies for total employment

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Who are the major employers in Ohio?

The state’s top 100 accounts for 8.5% of the state’s workers. And 54 of the top 100 are headquartered in Ohio, employing 586,873 workers on their own, according to a December report from the Ohio Department of Development.

No. 1 in terms of total employment is Walmart, with 53,310 employees spaced among 176 retail operations and seven distribution centers at the time of the report. A close second is Cleveland Clinic, with 52,648 employees estimated to work in Ohio for the international healthcare organization.

The top three industries are retail (28 companies of the top 100), health (19), and manufacturing (19).

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is considered the largest employer at a single location in the state, with 32,514 employees at the Dayton air force base. But other public employers, such as the state, universities, and individual counties and cities, are not included in the report.

Each employer’s headcount was either reported by the company or estimated based on publicly available information. Because this data is from the end of 2021, recent updates are not included.
