NORMAN – The Oklahoma rowing team treks north to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday to compete in the Ohio State Invite at Griggs Reservoir Park.
The regatta will comprise of two sessions, the first starting at 8:00 a.m. CT and the second at 12:00 p.m. CT. The Sooners will face off with Big Ten opponents Michigan State and No. 20 Indiana in the morning before taking on Notre Dame and the hosts No. 9 Ohio State in the later round.
“We’re excited to line up against some great competition from the Big 10 and ACC this weekend,” head coach Leeanne Crain said. “It’s early in the season and we’re still trying to identify the combinations that will yield the greatest speed, so the opportunity to race twice on Saturday will enable us to look at some different lineups. The venue is spectacular, and the stage is set for some great racing.”
Five different boats will race for each of the teams in both groupings, featuring three varsity eight lineups and two varsity fours.
Results will be posted on the team’s twitter account (@OU_Rowing) and the entire regatta will be streamed on Big Ten Plus. A subscription is required.
Scouting the Competition
- The host Buckeyes are the highest ranked team in the competition. They come into Saturday on the back of a successful ACC/Big Ten Regatta that saw their top three boats go 4-2 in races against three ranked opponents.
- No. 20 Indiana last competed back on March 19-20 at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, totaling two wins and ten second place finishes on the weekend.
- Notre Dame, which is receiving votes alongside the Sooners in the most recent Pocock CRCA poll, also competed in the Cardinal Invite, placing behind the Hoosier boats in every race on Sunday. Their most recent outing at the Doc Hosea Invite was cut short due to weather.
- The Spartans come into the weekend hot off a clean sweep of their races against Eastern Michigan last week. MSU won four of the five races by at least fifteen seconds or more.
