Chuck Todd Bemoans Biden Not Connecting Ukraine to ‘Voting Rights’

On Sunday’s Meet the Press on NBC, political director Chuck Todd regretted the fact that during his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden didn’t make the connection between the war in Ukraine and the fight for voting rights in the United States.

After complaining about Biden’s State of the Union speech not getting the attention it deserved because of the intensifying war in Ukraine, Todd turned to guest and Princeton University African American studies professor Eddie Glaude to claim he “joked about bringing up the State of the Union, it’s like nobody else is talking about it.” Todd then mentioned that he was surprised that during Biden’s speech, there was a “lack of connecting the fight for democracy and freedom abroad, with the fight for democracy at home.”

Hoping to make viewers think “voting rights” and the war in Ukraine were in any way connected, Todd made the point that today was the anniversary of Bloody Sunday and that Vice President Kamala Harris would be marching in Selma.

Glaude responded that he was “stunned” that Biden didn’t exploit the Russian invasion of Ukraine and all the human suffering there to push the Democrat Party’s voting rights agenda. He thought “it was an easy kind of rhetorical move. Let’s defend democracy abroad and secure democracy at home.”

Todd agreed, claiming it was a “politically helpful” message.

Glaude asked rhetorically “what would it mean to secure democracy at home?” Answering that he believes we have to address “what’s happening across the country in terms of the assault on voting rights.” Continuing to whine about the mythical assault on the right to vote, Glaude said the “illiberal forces within our country that are driving the challenge to voter rights” need to be addressed as well.

Todd ended the show preaching that “if we’re going to get drawn in more, you gotta explain to the American people why this fight matters.”

Between the ABC segment earlier in the day where the panel tried to politicize the war in Ukraine to blame former President Donald Trump, and this segment using the war to push a federal takeover of our elections, it’s clear there is nothing the leftist media won’t exploit.

CHUCK TODD: Eddie, I joked about bringing up the State of the Union, it’s like nobody else is talking about it. But if there was one thing that surprised me about the President’s State of the Union was the lack of connecting the fight for democracy and freedom abroad, with the fight for democracy at home. Today’s Bloody Sunday, ok? On Selma, the Vice President’s there, going to march against the bridge. Second time without John Lewis. It feels odd not to have John Lewis there leading this. But were you surprised?

EDDIE GLAUDE: I was stunned! I mean it was an easy kind of rhetorical move. Let’s defend democracy abroad and secure democracy at home.

TODD: And politically helpful. I mean hate to be that crass about it but right? It’s an easy political message.

GLAUDE: And what would it mean to secure democracy at home? We have to address the question of what’s happening across the country in terms of the assault on voting rights. And we would also have to address the illiberal forces within our country that are driving the challenge to voter rights. So I didn’t understand it and I thought it was a mistake.

TODD: And I think its a way, you gotta, if we’re going to get drawn in more, you gotta explain to the American people why this fight matters.
